CAUTION: This is a moderate-intensity route. Always wear your properly fitted, Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD). This is an active shipping route. Paddlers should stay out of the middle of the channel. Use caution when crossing the river and cross in a straight line or at a 90-degree angle.
Begin your paddle adventure at Buffalo RiverWorks and take in the view of RiverFest Park and Tewksbury Lodge. Kayak and hydro bike rentals are available. Parking area available to unload and load your own paddlecraft. Launch comfortably from an ADA-accessible roller dock.
As you head upstream (to the right) you will see one of the fast-growing areas in Buffalo, with multiple new residential buildings dotting the shoreline. In-water plantings from recent restoration work may be in bloom. These plantings also attract common Buffalo River wildlife. Continue upstream towards Ohio Street Boat Launch next to Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Association where rowing crews practice on the river. At this point, either return back to Buffalo RiverWorks or get out of your paddlecraft and stretch your legs at NYS DEC Ohio Street Boat Launch. It is an ideal spot to rest and enjoy nature. It’s also popular with local anglers. In recent years this site has undergone significant habitat restoration and now features a pollinator meadow. The Niagara River Greenway runs adjacent to the site. Continue your exploration by foot along Ohio Street to see its economic revival. Across the street is the active Father Conway Park, former Ohio Basin Canal for large shipping vessels to turn around in the Buffalo River. There are no restroom facilities or kayak storage at Ohio Street Boat Launch. Parking area is available on site.
