Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, along with our partners at Erie County, are excited to announce that improvements to Red Jacket Riverfront Natural Habitat Park will be occurring over the next few months.

Red Jacket is located along the Buffalo River at the foot of Smith Street in South Buffalo. This hidden gem gives visitors the opportunity to be surrounded by natural beauty in the heart of the City. The park is regularly used by community members to fish, launch kayaks, take in views of the Buffalo River, and enjoy leisurely strolls through various habitat zones.

In September 2020, Waterkeeper hosted a public meeting to gather the community’s input and ideas on enhancing the park for their enjoyment. Everyone agreed that the park is an asset to the community and the environment but that they would like to ‘clean it up a bit’, have more opportunities to sit and relax by the water, and be able to launch their paddlesport vessels more easily. Based on the community’s input, Waterkeeper, Erie County, and our design consultant (Wendel) developed the following site enhancements to meet their wishes.

Work is slated to begin at the park in mid-September 2021 and be substantially complete by the end of 2021. During this time, the park will be closed to the public. We apologize in advance for the park closure, but we promise the outcome will be worth the wait!
